- Indications for Use.
Stavudine should be used as a remedy for treatment of viruses in patients with HIV-positive analysis, as the medication possesses the activity against HIV.
- Action
Medication is effective against infections of HIV, including infections caused by treatment with Zidovudine.
- Posology and Administration
The average dose for treatment of adult patients and children with body weight over 30kg is 30mg. Patients with body weight of 60kg and more should take 40mg. The dose taken per day needs to be divided into several intakes, which should be 12 hours apart from each other, thus taking a dose of 30-40mg two times a day.
Children (older than 3 months) with body weight lower than 30kg should take Stavudine in dose of 1mg per 1 kilo, which should be taken two times a day. In case of higher weight, it is possible to use adult dose for treatment of children.
For treatment of increased activity of hepatic ferments and poly-neuropathy, it is recommended to stop treatment with Stavudine. It is possible to renew the treatment when the side effects disappear, but therapy should be started over with a smaller dose: weight lower than 60kg 0 15mg two times a day; weight over 60kg – 20mg two times a day.
For treatment of patients, who have compromised functioning of kidneys, it is recommended to use lower doses, depending on CK indications.
Stavudine works best, when taken not more than one hour before meal, which affects its blotting capacity. It is also allowed to take medication with delicate food.
The length of treatment should be defined by a treating doctor depending on individual reaction. The medication can be used for long-term treatment for as long as 2 years.
If by accident you miss dose, skip it and do not take a double dose in order to make up what you have missed.
- Counterindications
- severe compromised functioning of kidneys;

- hypersensitivity to Stavudine or to any other component of the medication.

When treated with Stavudine patients have to stay under strict doctor’s control.
Medication should be administered with caution for treatment of patients, who have compromised functioning of kidney or liver, or those who have pancreatitis of injury of nerves.
Patients should be very cautious and not spread the infection to other people.
There is no sufficient information as of today about use of Stavudine in children under age of 3 months.
Patients who have diabetes should be informed that the prepared solution of medication contains 50mg of saccharose.
- Interface with Other Medications
It is not allowed to use Stavudine in combination with other medications without recommendation of a doctor as there is a possibility of developing adverse side effects from such interaction.
- Overdosing
If you suspect that you got overdosed by taking to much of the medication, or if you think your child has taken too much of it, or if you by accident swallow to much, this should not make a big risk for your health. But to keep you confident, it is better to consult a doctor and have a medical check-up.
- Side Effects
It is not easy to single out, which side effects are caused by use of Stavudine, and which are caused by other medications and diseases, when treating HIV_positive patients. Some adverse side effects can be caused by the condition of disease itself.
Side effects on CNS: headache, numb sensation or feeling of acute burning in feet, arms and legs, dizziness, weakness, lack of energy, insomnia.
Side effects on digestive system: stomach pains, dryness of mouth, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite which can result in weight loss, constipation or diarrhea, pancreatitis, liver disorder.
Side effects on musculoskeletal system: pains in muscles and joints (myalgia and athralgia).
Disorder of blood composition.
Allergic reactions: rash on skin.
Other reactions: feverish conditions, panting, chest pains, respiratory infections.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
Stavudine can be taken during pregnancy according to prescription and only if the expected favor for mother is more important than chances of harming the fetus. Medication should be administered under doctor’s supervision to pregnant patients. Breast-feeding has to be stopped, if medication needs to be used during the period of lactation. It is in any case recommended not to breast-feed for patients, who have HIV-infections, as there is a chance of transmitting the disease to the baby.
- Driving
It is not recommended to operate machinery and drive vehicles, when using Stavudine for treatment, as it causes lowering of rate of reaction.
