- Posology and Administration
Oxcarbazepine should be administered individually according to clinical testings!
For treatment of adult patients, as well as elderly people, the medication should be used in dose of 600mg per day (8-10mg per 1 kilo of body mass per day). The dose should be divided into several intake during monotherapy. The efficient therapeutic effect is noticed, when the range of dose varies from 600 to 2400 per day. The dose can be slowly increased by maximum 600mg per day at a one week interval, until reaching the necessary clinical effect from treatment. The patients, treated in hospitals usually are able to increase the dose much faster by up to 2400mg per day in a period of 48 hours.
When medication is used as part of combined treatment, it should be administered in starting dose of 600mg per day (8-10mg per 1 kilo per day), which should be split in two intakes. The usual therapeutic dose, which gives significant therapeutic effect is 600-2400mg per day. If there is necessity, the dose can be gradually increased by up to 600mg per day at a one week interval until reaching the necessary result of treatment.
In clinical studies of controlled trials there were cases of use of more than 2400mg per day, and there is also very limited experience of use of the medication in dose of 4200mg per day.
When the medication is used for treatment of children, it is necessary to start with dose of 8-10mg per 1 kilo of mass of body, which should be split into two intakes, when Oxcarbazepine is used in monotherapy or if there is need to use Oxcarbazepine in combined treatment. When Oxcarbazepine is combined with other anti-epileptic medications, it shows clinical effect at the general supporting dose of 30mg per 1 kilo of mass of body taken per day. The daily dose can be gradually increased until reaching the desired clinical effect from treatment by 10mg per 1 kilo per day at a one week interval up to reaching the maximal dose of 46mg per 1 kilo of body weight per day.
Patients with moderate or light compromised functioning of liver don’t need any dose correction. Administration of Oxcarbazepine for treatment of patients with compromised functioning of liver in severe form has not been studied.
Patients, who suffer from compromised functioning of kidneys should start treatment with dose of 300mg per day and the dose, used for treatment, should be increased very slowly until reaching clinical effect.

Periods of lactation and pregnancy, hypersensitivity, children under the age of 2 years.

If Oxcarbazepine treatment causes allergic reactions, it should be immediately withdrawn. The medication should be administered with care for treatment of patients, who suffer from compromised kidneys function, patients with assumption of hepatitis development during the period of the treatment (the medication should be withdrawn). It is required to have control of mass of body during treatment of patients, who have chronic failure of heart. The treatment should be gradually withdrawn (as there is a risk of increasing the frequency of epileptic fits.

Oxcarbazepine is allowed for combined intake with other medications only in case of appropriate medical education. It is not allowed to self-administer the medication in combination with other drugs without doctor’s order.
- Overdosing
Symptoms of getting overdosed include: dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, problems with balance when standing, vomiting, high speed unintentional oscillating movements of eyes (up to several hundreds per minute).
- Side Effects
Side effects are as usual moderately evidenced or at all weak. Such effects usually have transitory effect and can be noticed at the beginning of treatment.
When side effects emerge, they usually appear in form of manifestations of dizziness, fatigability, headache, nausea, deficit in concentration of attention, vomiting, stomach pains, constipation, diarrhea, and foggy vision.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
Use of Oxcarbazepine medication in pregnant women is not experienced widely. If there is severe necessity to administration of Oxcarbazepine in pregnant women, it is necessary to evaluate the expected benefits of treatment and the possibilities of having side effects and aggravations, which are especially likely to emerge during the first trimester of treatment, and in women, who are using Oxcarbazepine for treatment and unexpectedly become pregnant. If there is a need to use medication during pregnancy, it is recommended to use minimal efficient dose. Patients should be aware of the possibility of causing disorders of development of the fetus. Oxcarbazepine should not be used during breastfeeding.
