Griseofulvin Fulvicin
- Indications for Use.
Griseofulvin is one of the most effective treatment used in case of fungous diseases of skin (dermatomycoses). The medication should be used for treatment of patients, who have such health problems as favus (fungous disease of skin, mainly in the area of the scalp), microsporia (fungous disease with parasites) and trichophytia on the smooth skin or scalp, epidermophytia (skin diseases caused by filamentous parasite fungi), smooth skin caused by Trichophyton (causative ringworm fungous), as well as in patients who have damaged nails (damages were caused by pathogenic fungi - fungi-parasites, which cause such human’s diseases as red Epudermophyton and Trichophyton).
- Action
Griseofulvin has anti-fungal effect and ability to retart the procreation and growth of fungi, which produce diseases. As a result of such treatment the medication has the ability to relieve signs of disease, such as burns, itching and pains.
- Posology and Administration
The mode of administration and doses.
Tablets of Griseofulvin should be taken during meal orally (preferably with one tea spoon of vegetable fat). Suspension should be taken for treatment of children under the age of 3 years (suspended matter of solid particles in fluid). Ointment should be used separately for curing of limited lesions of skin and it should be combined with medication taken orally.
For treatment of adult patients with microsporia the medication should be taken in dose of 8 tablets per day, while children should use dose, basing on their weight (21-22mg per 1 kilo of body mass per day). The treatment should be continued on a daily basis until receiving negative analysis for fungous disease, then the therapy should be carried for another 2 weeks, while the medication should be taken once in two tays and then for 2 weeks two times per week.
When using Griseofulvin in infiltrative, superficial or suppurant form for treatment of conditions, causing appearance of abscess on skin and induration of the skin) forms of favus and Trichophytiain adult patients, Griseofulvin should be used in the same dose as for treatment of children – 18mg per 1 kilo of body mass.
When the medication is used for treatment of patients with mycoses of scalp (fungous disease), the head should be shaved off once a week and the surface of scalp should be washed well with water and soap several times a week. Anti-fungal ointments should be used for rubbing into skin of head in order to smeal the focuses of lesions with 2-3% of iodine spirit.
For treatment of trichophytias, onychomycoses, and favus of the scalp the medication should be used in daily dose of 625mg (5 tablets) for treatment of adult patients with mass of body below 50kg. For treatment of adults with mass of body above 50kg for any additional 10kg of weight it is necessary to use 1 tablet of the medication adding to the 5 tablets. It is not allowed to use more than one g of medication (8 tablets) per day. For treatment of adolescents and children, who suffer from onychomychoses the medication should be used in dose of 16mg per 1 kilo per day and for the second month of treatment the same dose should be used once in two says. In further treatment the dose should be taken two times a week.
The length of treatment course should not be less than 8 months.
For treatment of onychomycoses Griseofulvin treatment should be combined with removal of nails with remedies of keratolyc origin (thus causing tearing away and softening of nails) and apply other anti-fungal medications. When using ointment for treatment, it should be spread in a thin layer with a daily dose on up to 30g, put on the place of damage. It is recommended to continue such treatment for at least 2 weeks after the moment, when clinical symptoms go away and all negative side effects disappear.
- Counterindications
Lupus syndrome, porphyries, diseases of blood system, systemic lupus erythematosus, organic diseases of kidneys and liver, pregnancy, malignant neoformations.
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
As the medication can cause negative side effects on reproductive function (for both women and me) it is necessary to use effective non-hormonal contraception during treatment with Griseofulvin. It has not been determined if the medication is safe for treatment during lactation period. It is recommended not to drink alcohol during treatment with Griseofulvin, as it has the ability to enhance the effect from treatment.
The medication is not allowed for out-patient administration in extra-mural care, especially foe drivers of vehicles, people engaged in dangerous jobs, like airmen.
In suspension of diabetes and diathesis the medication should not be taken, as it contains sugar.

- Overdosing
There is no data about cases of getting overdosed. It is not allowed to take more medication in bigger doses than were prescribed by your doctor, and if side effects become severely manifested, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
- Side Effects
When Griseofulvin is used for treatment there is risk of having dyspeptic events, such as digestive upsets, nausea, headache, dizziness, hives, events of disorientation (loss of orientation), leucopenia (low level of blood leucocytes), in rare cases - leucocytosis (high number of leucocytes the in blood). If such conditions happen to a patient, it is necessary to discontinue treatment for 3-4 days, and if side effects are not severe, then it is just possible to reduce the daily dose slowly for a period of several days.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
The medication is not recommended for administration during the period of pregnancy and breast-feeding.

It is recommended to keep away from activities, which require alertness and speed of psychomotor reaction and can be potentially hazardous during treatment with Griseofulvin.
